The Muslim's Duties While Living in Western Countries

Abdelaziz Ragab Sheikh

All praise is due to Allah, and prayer and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah and his followers.

Islam looks at a Muslim who lives in Western Countries as an ambassador, and a representative of Islam, wether he likes or dislikes this. Society judges Islam according to his behaviour and dealings with others, therefore; he must know his duties towards his religion, himself, his family, his people, and towards the society in which he lives.

His duties towards his religion

He must comply with the instructions of his Lord, avoids His prohibitions, follows the manners mentioned in the Holy Quran, takes notice of applying his Prophet's Sunnah; practise.

He must be found where His Lord ordered , and be absent from places his Lord forbade him to go to.

He must know that the most acts which pleases the Almighty Allah are those He ordered him to do such as: praying, zakat (alms), fasting, hajj…etc :

8: 20. O you who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger, and turn not away from him (i.e. Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ)) while you are hearing. 21. And be not like those who say: "We have heard," but they hear not.

His duties towards himself

By protecting himself and making it develop well, also by making it  free and proud enough to reject being enslaved to anyone except to The Almighty Allah.

98: 5. And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat: and that is the right religion.

Strengthening his body through physical excerises:

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak one, and both are good. Adhere to that which is beneficial for you. Keep asking Allah for help and do not refrain from it. If you are afflicted in any way, do not say: 'If I had taken this or that step, it would have resulted into such and such,' but say only: 'Allah so determined and did as He willed.' The word 'if' opens the gates of satanic thoughts".

Protecting it from dangerous acts, i.e. drinking liquor, taking drugs, adultery or suicide 5: 90. O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, Al-Ansab , and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan's (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful .

His duties towards his family

This is achieved by gently protecting it from melting with the surroundings, and by strengthening Islamic ties, because every Muslim is accountable for his family:

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, "All of you are guardians and are responsible for your wards. The ruler is a guardian and responsible for his subjects; the man is a guardian and responsible for his family; the woman is a guardian and is responsible for her husbands' house and his offspring; and so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your wards."

His duties towards his brothers

He must bond with other muslims, so they become as if they were one person. The way to achieve this is by coopertion and good treatment. He must avoid bigotry. There is a Hadeeth which shows our duties towards other muslims:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Six are the rights of a Muslim over another Muslim. It was said to him: Allah's Messenger, what are these? Thereupon he said: When you meet him, offer him greetings; when he invites you to a feast accept it. when he seeks your council give him, and when he sneezes and says:" All praise is due to Allah," you say Yarhamuk Allah (may Allah show mercy to you); and when he fails ill visit him; and when he dies follow his bier.

His duties towards his nation

He must be aware of the Muslims' circumstances and problems, and do his best to help in solving them, defending and strengthening muslims against the Oppressors:

3: 110. You [true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Sunnah (legal ways, etc.)] are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden), and you believe in Allah. And had the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) believed, it would have been better for them; among them are some who have faith, but most of them are Al-Fasiqun (disobedient to Allah - and rebellious against Allah's Command).

His duties towards the non-muslim society in which he lives

He must be a role model for a true Muslim, which Islam and Muslims are proud of by participating in the growth and prosperity of the society, and by fighiting corruption. He must call for Islam with wisdom and fair preaching, as we are ordered by the Almighty Allah:

16: 125. Invite (mankind, O Muhammad (ﷺ) ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.

May Allah's prayer and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and companions

Doveri del musulmano in terra straniera

Autore: sheikh Abd alAziz Rajab

Verso i suoi fratelli:
